A fine example of Miguel Berrocal's celebrated "puzzle sculpture" practice, in which the Spanish sculptor conceived three-dimensional figurative works as interlocking bronze elements that could be fully disassembled and reassembled by the owner — a radical rethinking of sculptural multiples that made Berrocal one of the most collected and commercially innovative sculptors of the postwar era.
"Portrait de Michèle" renders a woman's head in Berrocal's signature Cubist-inflected, biomorphic language: cascading, ribbon-like locks of hair rendered as sinuous, interlocking nickel-plated forms envelop the sculptural head, parting to reveal a single stylized facial profile with a jewel-set eye in gilt. The composition is built from numerous discrete cast elements, fitted together with the mechanical precision characteristic of Berrocal's puzzle works, and raised on the sculptor's typical black cylindrical plinth.
