One of Miguel Berrocal's best-known puzzle sculptures, Romeo and Juliet takes the form of a closed fist that disassembles into 16 individually cast and finely finished bronze elements, revealing two abstracted figures nested within. A hallmark of Berrocal's "dismountable" sculpture practice — which he pioneered starting in 1959 — the work reflects his formal training in mathematics and engineering as much as his sculptural sensibility, with each interlocking piece precision-fitted to the next. Signed and numbered 1408 from an edition of 2000, the piece sits on its original rotating cylindrical base.
