An elegant pair of French Art Deco bedside tables (tables de chevet), France, circa 1940. Crafted in richly figured walnut with a warm, hand-polished French finish, each nightstand offers two dovetailed drawers fitted with brass ring pulls and a shaped, scalloped brass swag drop below the lower drawer.
The case sits on gently curved, tapering saber legs that terminate in brass sabots (foot caps), a hallmark of fine French cabinetmaking of the period. The upper corners of each case are dressed with cast bronze mounts in a stylized foliate/scroll motif, adding a refined decorative accent that catches the light beautifully against the dark mahogany ground.
Each top is bookmatched and quarter-veneered with a gently shaped, cushioned edge, echoed in the subtly serpentine drawer fronts. The pair shows the fluid, restrained lines characteristic of French Art Deco furniture transitioning toward the more classical, Louis XV-influenced silhouettes popular in French decorating circles of the 1940s.
Sold as a true pair, these nightstands would suit a bedroom, or equally serve as diminutive commodes or side tables flanking a sofa.
