A striking charcoal drawing by French Art Deco master Paul Jouve, depicting a panther locked in combat with a coiled python — one of the artist's most celebrated and recurring subjects, epitomized in his renowned etching "Jaguar Catching a Snake" (c. 1926). Rendered in dense, energetic cross-hatching against the warm ground of the paper, the composition captures the raw physical tension between predator and serpent with the sculptural precision and dramatic force that define Jouve's animalier work. Inscribed "Epreuve d'essai," this sheet is a working trial proof, offering a rare glimpse into the artist's process en route to a finished plate.

Artist Biography:
Paul Jouve (1878–1973) stands among the most important animalier artists of the French Art Deco era, celebrated for paintings, drawings, and sculpture of wild animals executed with extraordinary anatomical precision and dramatic intensity. Trained in engraving and lithography under Henri Patrice Dillon, Jouve rose to prominence at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, contributing sculptural friezes for architect René Binet, and later illustrated acclaimed editions of Kipling's The Jungle Book. His work is held in major museum collections worldwide and remains among the most sought-after of the Art Deco period.
