An elegant French Art Deco table lamp in brass with a satin finish, attributed to the Parisian decorating house Dominique. The central column is an elongated ovoid made of narrow vertical facets. Each facet catches the light differently, so the column has a soft, shimmering rhythm. Rings of Macassar ebony at the top and bottom of the column set off the warm gold of the brass with the dark, richly figured wood. The column rises from a stepped circular base whose concentric tiers echo the architectural geometry of the period. Pairing precious exotic wood with metal in this way is characteristic of the firm’s refined, restrained work. The lamp works equally well on a desk, a side table, or a console.
Dominique was founded in Paris in 1922 by André Domin and Marcel Genevrière. It became one of the most respected decorating houses of the Art Deco period, known for refined furniture and lighting that combined classical proportion with modern simplicity and fine materials. In 1926 the firm joined Pierre Chareau, Pierre Legrain, Jean Puiforcat, and Raymond Templier to form the influential “Groupe des Cinq.”
