This set of six silver-plated candleholders from Christofle’s Gallia collection takes the form of a child’s spinning top. A wide, shallow disc flares out from the center of each piece. Above it, a slender cone rises to a narrow socket made for a tall, thin taper. Below, a short tapering foot lifts the disc off the table, so each holder seems to hover just above the surface, as if caught mid-spin.
The model is illustrated in Henri Bouilhet’s 150 ans d’orfèvrerie, the standard history of Christofle, in the chapter on the house’s design of the 1970s. There the holders appear grouped with long tapers, the discs overlapping in a cluster of light. The mirror-polished surfaces reflect the room around them and multiply the candlelight. The holders can be grouped together as shown in the book or spread along a dining table. A complete set of six is uncommon.
