Exceptional early French Art Deco sideboard by Jules Leleu, dating from 1922, veneered in richly figured amboyna burl (loupe d’amboyna) with a deep, lustrous French‑polished finish. The long, gently concave façade is framed by softly rounded corners and raised on four tapered, slightly splayed legs, giving the piece an elegant, floating presence against the wall in classic Leleu fashion.
The composition is perfectly balanced: a central pair of curved doors opens to a capacious interior, flanked on either side by vertical stacks of four drawers, all fronted in continuous amboyna for a seamless grain flow. Discreet square metal pulls punctuate the façade in a precise grid, providing a refined geometric counterpoint to the swirling burl figure and underlining the piece’s modernity. The top is beautifully proportioned and visually “light”, allowing the amboyna to read almost like a sheet of burnished satin, recalling Leleu’s celebrated use of exotic woods and luxurious finishes exhibited in the early 1920s Salons.
A rare and sophisticated work from the beginning of Leleu’s Art Deco career, this sideboard is ideal as a focal point in a dining room, entrance hall, or gallery‑like living space, where its sumptuous veneer and pure, streamlined silhouette can be fully appreciated.
